08.21.26 the divergence of the art and content markets 08.21.26

One noticeable effect of generative AI in the media landscape has been a recognition of the difference between art and content marketplaces. Historically the overlap has been extremely large, but the rise of technology created an easy path for media to be created and shared. This brought the creation of content to the forefront of conversation within media marketplaces and began to highlight the differences between art and content.

The approach to navigation for those within both marketplaces has historically been highly similar. The effects of technology, specifically generative AI, has changed the perception of those marketplaces enough to fundamentally change the approach to navigation for each respective market separately.

The music industry has been built on the economics of the art marketplace. In modern times, the approach to navigation that those within the music industry take skews more towards the content marketplace approach. A modern content navigation approach will map unpredictability while navigating the art marketplace since they are no longer so closely intertwined.

This is the dissonance that I think so many people feel right now. This is why artists are being pushed to make content and struggling to understand why. This is why it feels that content is infringing on artistic spaces.
