pushing the ai problem downstream 10.20.25

it's such a boring title to a blog post, but it's exactly what we're doing. on Sept 29, 2025, Governer Gavin Newsom signed SB 53 putting larger protections on AI engines creating the likeness of a person. The idea of this is fine, but if we continue down this path of stopgaps that don't address the fundamental mindshift that artistic communities need to survive, then we're cooked.

AI is coming and at large, governmental, or corporate scales, the advancing can be monitored, but the amatuer sector will always follow and the development of a technology will eventually lead to the democratization of it. Easy access allows for hobbiests and layfolk to create what they want without the limitation of regulation. The product (ai creations) will eventually make it's way to market if there is a demand for it.

my argument is that a majority of 'content creators/artists' also utilized the same mechanisms that the development and democratization of content created in the creative sectors in order to enter those spaces. now that those markets are getting contested by a competitor that can meet the demands, those who have entered the space through the means of ease of access are getting wiped out.

through all of the expansion of technology, the creatives that have lasted and survived have been those who push boundaries in their creation and do it because they have to. the democratization of creativity has allowed for new voices to be heard and created accessibility, but it has also multiplied the amount of voices in the ecosystem, thus expanding the market. if the supply increases and demand stays the same, value goes down. not price, value (shout out bordieuxxxxxx). the demand has increased a bit, but now we can clearly see that supply is outweighing demand in the content market.

the markets will change and continually change when new technologies are created, demanded, and democratized. it has happened before and it will happen again and it will always be the same way to escape: innovate.
