cultural content through the lens of musical genre 08.09.25
I’m talking with an artist right now in hopes of working with her and it’s sparked a lot of interesting ideas about the intersection of art and content. The content industry is so stratified in the ways that people live within it. Some are so solidly living within the economic hierarchy and some extend their reach into the artistic hierarchy; there are worlds in between those two that must create some sort of cognitive dissonance that I can’t imagine. Maybe I can. Not sure.
The idea of content as art has been a pillar that I want to establish if we end up working together. It’s something that I’ve established for myself and anyone else that I’ve worked with, but it’s particularly important in this case. I think I’m getting a bit off track. I wanted to write down my thoughts about genre here. How genre comes from community. Is that the same within content? I guess it is. how there are so many different networks that dictate internet communities and also genres. At the end of the day it’s all media that can be broken down into subcategories.
To zoom out and look at the genres of culture should be the approach I think. Especially with an artist who is a polymath. What are the cultural genres that she’s living in? How do they relate to each other and how can we guide them to relate to each other? All that through the lens of community (at all levels). By levels, I mean to say community through the fans, community through her peers, community through contemporaries and those who aren’t as much. I think it will be pivotal to understand and diagnose where she lives in order to really understand how to pursue a true type of success.
I’m going to buy a book on network theory.
